Into a New Year already. Time sure does fly by. We have been very busy in our life. Jonathon is now in 3rd grade and holding his own. It is still a fight and struggle everyday to try to teach the teachers to teach the way Jonathon will learn the best. He has another new resource room teacher this year and she is very hard to communicate with. He pretty much has had Social Studies and Science taken away from him in the general education class this year. Not to say that I give up, but I am trying to focus on some more important courses right now and I try my best to get Science and Social Studies in his daily life on my own. I have been working on Math with Jonathon at home and he is actually doing very well. He is not at 3rd grade level, I believe he is around 1st grade level, but I'll take it for now. His reading is coming along much better this year, he has come a long way since last summer. I wish that I had help with daycare, I would pull him out of Memphis Schools so fast there heads would spin, they are not good for my child. His daycare is in located right in the school building therefore works out so that I am able to work and take care of us. Sometimes I sit and wonder if it would be better for me to just stop working all together and be home when he gets out of school so that I can help him more with his studies. I don't want to be a failure, I did not ask to get a divorce after 24 years of marriage, I did not ask to have to work full time and miss out on alot of things with my children especially Jonathon, I did not ask to have an ex husband that just will not help out in any way but wont sign off so I can have full custody. I have been seperated for 3 years and divorced for 2 now. I am very proud of myself that I have my divorce bills almost paid in full. My ex is on his 3rd bankruptcy. I was able to purchase a newer vehicle last April. I sold my 1996 Ranger and purchased a 2009 Escape. I was able to park my 1998 Jeep and purchase my middle child a 2004 Dakota. I am still renting and have not found our forever home just yet, we are moving again in a few months to a new rental - maybe this one will be our forever home, maybe not. I would love to have a mortgage one day and purchase a home. My bills are paid every month, food on the table, mini vacations last summer AND I don't even make 20,000 BUT my ex makes 65,000, lives alone, AND is on his 3rd bankruptcy, I JUST DON'T GET IT. I don't understand how someone would just throw their life away in the bottle and then not try to get them back. I mean I would not have ever went back, but I tried to show him how to have a life with his 3 boys and he just don't care.
So I am looking forward to Spring coming, us moving to a new home, getting ready for more camping and kayaking with Jonathon and his dog Tiny, beach days, and hanging out with my boys and family AND maybe meeting some new friends. I will be moving close to my brother and I think this will be good for my family. My brother is the best and even though he is my baby brother, he has become a great man and I am very proud of him.
We lost our internet few months back, therefore I have not blogged or anything, maybe this year will be better and I can get internet at my new home.

Research
Research, Research, and more Research, print, print and more printing.........
I have been having weekly meetings with the principal and 2nd grade teacher lately. I-We are trying to figure out 2nd grade and Jonathon still.
As a mother I want the best for my child. I do not want my child segregated in anyway. This is very frustrating this year. Right now Jonathon spends more time in the resource room than he does in the general education class. This is very up setting. I do not want my child in the resource room all day. I feel and believe he belongs in the general education class room more than the resource room.
When I say "PARA PRO" I am not heard. Jonathon has not had a para pro since kindergarten. Why? Who knows. There are not enough to go around. He does not need one. It won't benefit him. Really?....... I'm sorry, but yes I do believe it will benefit him. I do not think a high school student is qualified to teach my child (buddy system) or peer to peer (2nd grade student) I do not believe my child should be in the back of the classroom working on math all by himself. My child should be sitting at his desk, listening along with the rest of the class. My child should be given the opportunity to have a helper(para pro) to help him read his paper and try to do his work. My child should be in the general education classroom more than the resource room.
So.....as always I am researching and printing assignments at home to work with Jonathon to get him up to speed on 2nd grade. I will teach my child spelling. I will teach my child math. I will teach my child patterns. I will teach my child to be a better reader. I will help my child succeed. I will fight for my child ALWAYS. I will not let my child be LEFT BEHIND!!!

CHRISTMAS 2015 into HAPPY NEW YEAR 2016
I took some time off from blogging because I had some personal family business to take care of.
My boys and I had a rough 2 years, but we are doing better now. We are settled into a nice home. We have a nice fenced in yard for Jonathon and his dog. We are close to town and school again.
Andrew has a good job and is doing well for himself. We are sad that he does not live with us any longer, but he is close by at his fathers house. He does take the time out to come and visit on the weekends and that is important to his brothers. I am very proud of my oldest son and where he is at in life right now.
Kenny has graduated high school this past May and will be graduating with an Associates in Criminal Law this summer. I am so very proud of him and everything that he has accomplished in such a short time. Kenny does still live with us and we are happy for that. We like having a man around the house.
Jonathon is currently in 2nd grade this year. Jonathon is doing well at school. I have some issues as always with IEP's, resource room, general education classroom and no para pro at the moment. I will continue to fight for my son and make sure he gets the best education, which is what he deserves.
Jonathon has been very healthy! He did well at his 8 year check up with the pediatrician. Blood work came back good. We still have to get his xray completed. He has no cavities and made it through another dentist appointment. His script has been holding with his eyes for 2 years now, so we do not go back for an eye appointment for 8 months. His ENT appointment went well. We go back in 6 months to check on wax in ears so for now we are administering ear drops. I still need to make his appointment/check up with his heart doctor though. I am not worried that there is any problems, but I am dreading that appointment. He is afraid of any doctor appointment except his pediatrician. He will scream, turn red, pop blood vessels in his face, its just so traumatic. I am still researching how to help him out with his anxiety over this. I am just so happy that he has been so happy and healthy.
I am a Registered Medical Assistant now. I finished school in July 2013. I had a couple of different jobs in the medical field and out over the last 2 years while I was trying to get my life back on track and make sure the boys were all taken care of. I just recently stepped back into the medical world and lets just say I am loving it. I love my job and I love where I work.

Last swim
Jonathon got invited to swim after school today. It was in the 90's so it was a perfect last swim of the season.

Back to School
Tuesday was our official back to school day.
Jonathon is in Kindergarten this year. He has a brand new teacher. He has his same aides as last year and the year before.
The teacher will be communicating by email daily with me about Jonathon. This makes me very happy, because I like to stay in the loop.
I am hoping that this is a fun filled year for my youngest.

Cold or sick
Jonathon woke up this morning sounding hoarse. By mid day he wanted to sit down and watch a movie. He never stops all day long so I knew he was under the weather.
After watching 2 Tom and Jerry Movies he perked up a little bit and played with his hot wheels track some.
Dinner he did not finish.
After dinner before bed snack...he did not want.
He helped me pick up his toys, get his pajamas on and get a drink, go potty, brush teeth. He climbed into bed, hugged his kitty and went off to sleep.
No bedtime story either.
I'm getting concerned. He has had 2 sinus infections in the last 2 months. One early November and one end of December. I know that his tubes were finally falling out. When he was diagnosed in Dec with a sinus infection he had wax build up so the pediatrician could not see in there. He prescribed ear drops for him.
I think it's time to call Dr. Ears (ENT) and see what's up.
He also has been giving me signs of other things. Noises are bothering him again.
He does not like the vacumn again
He does not like some power tool noises
He does not like his shower. this is a big heads up. Took me a couple weeks to put it together. He has been swimming for over 2 years with Miss Maggie(swim instructor) and he loves the water, he jumps off the deep end and goes under. He will NOT let me rinse his hair anymore. He literally freaks out and starts flailing all over throwing his hands in the air. I have to tip his head back. It's gotta be....those tubes are gone!
I am hoping he does not come down with a full blown sickness and miss school. School starts back up on Monday.
I will definitely be calling Dr. Ears on Monday.

Winter fun
What an accomplishment for Jonathon....Last year he would have never just sat in the snow let alone make a snow angel!!!!! Awesome job buddy!
Andrew has been the best big brother always! Jonathon loves him very much and they both enjoy spending fun time together! Thank you Andrew for being a great person and brother!!!

Vacation ending
Tomorrow is friday already. The boys will be going back to school on Monday. It has been a long Christmas break.
Jonathon has enjoyed his new toys very much and I am sure he will be missing them when he goes back to school. Jonathon still asks me daily about school. He loves school. And mommy is ready for the 3 to head back too.
I will miss them the first few days I am sure, but then we will all be back into our routine of things and it will go smoothly. Especially for Jonathon and I. Our schedule never changes.
Jonathon still gets up at 6:30a.m. and still goes to bed at 7p.m. Every once in a while I do try to change bedtime, but this is how it works best for Jonathon. This is how it has been for 5 years. I don't think I could sleep in if I was given the chance. And yes I do miss sleeping in at times, but like I said, this is what works, so this is what we do.
Now the teens on the other hand.....they have been sleeping their day away and staying up half the night. They might be a little grumpy on Monday morning.
We will enjoy the weekend! Maybe it will warm up so we can go back out.

January 1 2013
Today we celebrated the new year by not doing anything.
Jonathon and I were up bright and early as usual. I made him pancakes for breakfast with chocolate milk. We sat together in a quiet, peaceful kitchen and ate together.
After breakfast he watched his new Ice Age Continental Drift movie while I cleaned up the house some.
We spent our day playing hot wheels, legos, Ipad learning, reading story books and watching movies.
His big brothers came up stairs and played legos and hot wheels too.
We were not able to go outside today. Our temp never went over 22.

Field Trip Today
to Upland Farms! It was a perfect day to head out to the farm with the rest of the students. It was a little foggy in the morning, but our temps started out in the low 60's and by the time we finished up at the farm it was beautiful and sunny out. I believe it got up to 72.

31 for 21 Down Syndrome Awareness Month
Jonathon had a pretty good weekend. Especially today. Today went really well.
We are working on a new system. Reward system. If he is caught being good, he will receive a ticket to McDonalds or the Movie store. When he collects enough, then he will get a trip to McDonalds or the movie store or both.
He received one McDonalds ticket tonight. He ate all his dinner. He then picked up all his toys(which never happens, not all of them in less than 5 minutes), he listened when told to go take a shower and then he got to play Monster Trucks on the Wii for 30 minutes. He listened when it was time to get off and get a snack. He then went potty and brushed his teeth and got into bed.
I am so proud of him. I believe he understands. That's why I picked 2 of his favorite places. He loves chocolate shakes from McDonalds and he loves going to the movie store and walking around to get a movie.

I was really saddened on Friday when I witnessed just how bad he can be. I commend his teacher. She handled it very well. very calmly. She is a great teacher. Anyway I want him to listen to his teachers. I want him to get the very best education he can get. So I am willing to try anything for him. I came up with this idea myself and I am hoping they will be on board to try it out.

31 for 21 Down Syndrome Awareness Month

There was a lot happening at Memphis Elementary today.
It was a busy day for Jonathon.
The Firemen were at school today.
It is Fire Safety week.
We had a fire drill.
All the children went outside safely.
All the children and teachers went to the football field to listen to the Firemen talk about fire safety.
Then!
There was a huge surprise!
St. Marys Flight Care Arrived in the sky. I am glad that I was at school today and got to experience this with Jonathon. I have never been this close to a helicopter before and to be there and watch with Jonathon was amazing.
He was very excited at first when he was looking up into the sky to see what was coming. He could hear and at first thought it was an airplane. As it got closer and the wind picked up it got a little scary, but we were prepared because the Firemen warned us ahead of time to shield our eyes. Jonathon was very scared as the helicopter came closer and then it was quiet again after it landed.
I am so proud of Jonathon. Two years ago he would have never been able to stay out there and witness this special day. The noise and the size of the helicopter would have practically scared him to death. Yes he was scared, but he stayed, and he listened when I told him it would be okay. Then we hurried off to use the restroom and when we returned all the students were on the football field up close to the helicopter learning more about what St. Marys Flight Care does. We did not go close to the helicopter. He is not ready for that yet. And that's ok. I know one day he will be thrilled to get into a helicopter, ambulance, fire truck, and learn and see more. This was good for now.
Afterwards all the students and teachers got a group photo taken. I did not get this picture. Maybe when the teachers have it developed they will share and then I can share too.
Children with down syndrome are like any other child. Maybe some things may take longer to do or learn. Maybe some things may be a bit more scarier. Most of all they are children who want to learn and succeed just like you and I!

Well I did not make it again this year. I got extremely busy over the weekend and I forgot(embarrassed) to blog.

Jonathon is still having some issues at school. He is not listening. Which makes me really sad. Because he is doing it at home too. But then there is times that he does listen. Very frustrating. I hate going into the class and seeing him misbehave.
We started the visual aid this week. I'm hoping by the end of the week he gets the hang of it. I want to make him a copy that is smaller that he can carry with him.
Rest time is not going the greatest either. He just does not like it. And I can understand why. He has not napped for over 2 years. Later this week or the beginning of next week we are going to try his IPAD. He can sit and work on his IPAD for rest time as long as he is quiet and as long as he gives it back when rest time is over.
Most of all, I love Jonathon very much and I know we will get through this!!!

Jonathon is still having some issues at school. He is not listening. Which makes me really sad. Because he is doing it at home too. But then there is times that he does listen. Very frustrating. I hate going into the class and seeing him misbehave.
We started the visual aid this week. I'm hoping by the end of the week he gets the hang of it. I want to make him a copy that is smaller that he can carry with him.
Rest time is not going the greatest either. He just does not like it. And I can understand why. He has not napped for over 2 years. Later this week or the beginning of next week we are going to try his IPAD. He can sit and work on his IPAD for rest time as long as he is quiet and as long as he gives it back when rest time is over.
Most of all, I love Jonathon very much and I know we will get through this!!!

31 for 21 Down Syndrome Awareness Month day 5
Visual Aid.
That is our word of the day.
I had a meeting with the speech teacher - Miss O this morning. We discussed how to help Jonathon through out his day. And I asked her if she could make up some pec cards for him. And of course she said sure.
So she made him some signs and also put a book together for him. I'm sorry to say I did not get time to take a picture of it to post. But I will this weekend and then add an updated post to show all what we are doing.
I really hope this helps Jonathon out.
Mrs. Claeys (his young 5 teacher) said he had a better day today. He still wants to run into other classrooms at times. And he didn't listen at quiet time 100% so he got some activities taken away. I firmly believe that he will get it. IT's just going to take time and alot of patience on his teachers end.
We are keeping the lines of communication open. This is great. Because together we will be able to help Jonathon.
I love my little boy so very much! And just like everything else he has learned and accomplished so far. He too will learn this new routine. And one day we will all sit back and laugh about it.

31 for 21 Down Syndrome Awareness Month Day 4
So Jonathon did not have a good day at school today. He was very fidgety and hyper.
It's hard for me to fix or help the problem turn into a solution when I am not there to see exactly what is taking place. I just want Jonathon to have a good day. I know that he loves to go to school. I know that sometimes he gets hyper. I know that sometimes he just needs to focus.
At rest time he is taking a book to look at now. At first this was helping. Today it did not help. Today he thought it was a joke and read his book out loud(which is disturbing the class) and then kept trying to get up(which is disturbing the class). I will keep rest time going on the weekends now. Maybe this will help.
As far as everything else that is going on, his teacher and I will have to keep the lines of communication open and do what we can to help Jonathon.
I have started doing research about sensory disorder. I believe he has this even though he has never been diagnosed with it. I have just figured it out on our own and so far the things that I have bought to help him(headphones for noise issues) have worked so I will keep researching and keep trying until Jonathon and I figure it out. And we will!

31 for 21 Down Syndrome Awareness Month
I was able to speak with Jonathon's P.T. for a brief moment today. She informed me that Jonathon is doing great in therapy.
I told her that at our Buddy Walk on Saturday he was jumping over cracks in the sidewalk. And he was doing it very well. And that we have been working on standing on 1 foot for 3 sec. He can do 2 seconds with me. And we have been throwing his balloons around the house and he has been catching them! Well until our pumpkin cat popped them all. But we will just get more!
We love Miss Jen. She has been Jonathon's P.T. since he was an infant. I am very happy to have her. She is an amazing woman. Thank you for choosing this career Jennifer. You are great at your job.
