Field Trip Today
to Upland Farms! It was a perfect day to head out to the farm with the rest of the students. It was a little foggy in the morning, but our temps started out in the low 60's and by the time we finished up at the farm it was beautiful and sunny out. I believe it got up to 72.

School has started
Tuesday Sept 4, 2012 was our first day back to school. Andrew is a Senior this year. Kenny is a Sophomore and Jonathon entered the public school system as a student in Young 5's.
We have 3 very large Kindergarten rooms this year so I decided not to put Jonathon in Kindergarten. Young 5's is a brand new program at Memphis this year and this is the program I decided to enroll him in after a lot of thought.
Jonathon will continue to see his ECDD teacher Mrs. Rhodes from 7:55a.m. - 10:30a.m. Then he will go down and join the other students in Young 5's. He is in Young 5's from 10:30a.m. - 2:40p.m.
During this time he will have recess, lunch, science, rest time, specials(music, library, computers and gym) along with another recess in the afternoon. While this is a big adjustment for Jonathon he is doing okay so far. I actually think it's harder on me than him. Jonathon loves to go to school and I am very happy that he is.
Tuesday I sat with my good friend Nik and we just chatted all day. All day until pick up time. It was a great way to spend the first day. Her daughter Rylee started Kindergarten.
Wednesday I sat around and tried to do paperwork and catch up. But I just kept thinking about Jonathon and then I would tear up. I did not like Wednesday.
Thursday - today was a little better. I kept myself busy with paperwork about our upcoming Buddy Walk. (ST. Clair County Down Syndrome Support Group) I can't wait for this event to take place. I had a little bit of anxiety off and on, but I survived. And Jonathon had a great day.
So we will take one day at a time and see how it goes. I am hoping for a very good year.

He has grown up so much this year! My little baby is now a little boy.....Time flies.......
I am so lucky to have some great teachers teaching him at school.

IEPT Meeting
I went to Jonathon's IEPT meeting last Friday.
Gross motor he tested a 6 out of 10(you should be anywhere from a range of 8-12).
Fine motor he tested a 6 out of 10(should be anywhere from a range of 8-12).
For Receptive Communication he scored low - follows 3 or more familiar verbal commands(0), responds to the prepositions out and on(0), understands the simple possessive forms your and my(0).
Expressive communication he score low - uses 2 word utterances to express meaningful relationships(0), uses words to express what he or she sees and does and to express the experiences that immediately affect him or her(0), uses 3 word phrases meaningfully(0), uses the pronouns I, you, and me(0), uses words to relate information about other people, their actions, or their experiences(0), responds yes or no appropriately(0).
Gross Motor - walks up and down stairs without assistance.(0), jumps forward with both feet together(0), walks forward 2 or more steps on a line on the floor,alternating feet(1), walk down stairs without assistance, alternating feet(0), imitates the bilateral movements of an adult(0), bends over and touches the floor with both hands(0).
Fine Motor - uses pads of fingertips to grasp pencil(1), string 4 large beads(0), holds paper with one hand while drawing or writing with the other hand(1), fastens clothing without assistance(0), wiggles his or her thumb in bending, circular, and back and forth movements(0), traces designs with curved edges(0).

Perception and Concepts - identifies familiar objects by their use(0), sorts by color with demonstration(0), identifies big and little shapes(0)
Perceptual Motor - stacks 8 cubes vertically(0), copies a circle(0), copies a cross(0), copies the letters V, H, and T(0).
Attention and Memory- selects the hand hiding a toy(0), attends to a learning task or story in a small group for 5 minutes(1), recites memorized lines from books, poems, television shows, or songs(0), locates hidden items in a picture scene(0), focuses his attention on one task while being aware of, but not distracted by, surrounding activities(1), recalls familiar objects(0), repeats 3 digit sequences(0).
Now when they pick a day to do testing your child may not be in a "testing mood" therefore the test will not be 100% accurate, but there really isn't anything anyone can do about it. Some questions they are only allowed to ask once ~ so if your child does not cooperate ~ the test will not be 100% accurate ~ some questions they may ask 3 times, but its the same scenario in the end ~ so as a parent you must remember these rules and not get discouraged if your child is marked low on something that you know he or she is capable of doing. They will just catch it on the next testing day.
Jonathon tested very well on alot of his testing ~ I just wanted to share what we will be working on next and maybe it will help a family out to see what is ahead if their child is younger than 3. I have learned alot from other families this way and I just want to do my part in "paying it forward." and sharing this info with my family so they are aware of what is happening over this way.
Jonathon graduated out of P.T. and O.T. last November 09. He will now be getting P.T. and O.T. services once again and will remain getting speech services. It is not that he forgot anything, it is just that now it's time to learn how to jump, skip etc and write, string beads and these services will help him (and mommy- so mommy can help him) to continue to grow and be the best that he can be!
And I am always amazed at these tests ~ for example ~ who would think to have your child copy the letters V, H, and T?? ~ bend over and touch the floor with both hands ~ wiggle your thumb in bending circular motion??? I have learned not to get discouraged ~ to just go with the flow ~ and all will be conquered in the end!

Busy Busy Busy
Happy St. Patricks Day! I grew up thinking that I was Irish only to find out a few years ago that we are not Irish....... We lived in a town full of Irish patrons so my mom and dad decided to say "We are Irish" Silly parents I have! But we still celebrate like we are!
Jonathon has had a very busy week so far. Monday evening we went out to our St. Clair County Down Syndrome Support Group Meeting. A Few families showed up. We ate pizza, fruit, and cookies along with pop and got to sit down and visit with some other families while some of the children went outside to play. Jonathon spent his time keeping daddy busy running back and forth through out the house we were in. He did pretty well over all. Hopefully next month will be warmer so he can also go out and play.
Tuesday evening Kenny had a meeting at school about the Honor Society Trip coming up in May. Needless to say Jonathon spent the whole 30 minutes talking non stop kinda loud "out loud" At least the other parents thought he was cute.
He has been getting to bed close to 9p.m. when he use to go to bed at 7:30p.m. At least he is not grumpy during the day. Hopefully we can get a handle on this time change soon.
School is going very well for Jonathon. Teacher says that he is still trying to shove food in his mouth and needs to be reminded to eat just one bite at a time. I need to figure out how to get a handle on this. This is a big problem at home too.
Circle Time : He helped count the number of objects(green trains, boats, and buses) in their counting box. He was encouraged to put one in at a time while the teacher counted and with minimal prompts he did a great job!
He has to be reminded to stay seated during circle time, but continues to improve each week.
Jonathon had a good day. The other students look out for him. They interact more with him than he does with them. He will look at them and then go back to what he is doing/playing.

Evaluation Day
was today. I was a little misinformed though, it was only for P.T. He will remain seeing O.T. once per week for 30 minutes. His evaluation is in December for her.
We had to change our time for future classes with O.T. There is a little boy Caden that is in the room with Jonathon. When we see O.T. he is seeing P.T. and he just is not happy and yells and cries and Jonathon just can't stand it. It upsets him to the point where he starts crying. Today I had to put his potty headphones on, to continue learning with his teacher. Even though we won't be seeing P.T. any longer I had to address this issue with both O.T. and P.T. I won't have Jonathon upset, because then it's just a waste of time to be there. My P.T. (Miss Jen) whom we just got back and won't be seeing anyway totally agreed and said she would not put Jonathon through that again. Our new time is 9:30 -10:00a.m. on Tuesdays with O.T.(Miss Amanda). Our homework is to put money into the slot in the piggy bank(a real bank - not a toy).
P.T. evaluated Jonathon and confirmed that he does not need her services any longer. She will stay on as a consult(meaning that we can say anytime that we need to see her and we will be able to see her. And if we feel services are needed she will see us again.) I am happy that Jonathon is doing so well, but at the same time I am a little nervous about not seeing her any longer. But she will remain at Memphis schools to see other children and I have her cell number and her number at her main school sooo she is only a phone call away. She gave me some things to work on with Jonathon.
To start climbing up on a bench and "jump" off. (which is so weird - I tell him not to climb and not to jump - what was I thinkin (lol). I do see the point.
walk backwards for 5 or more steps - he can walk backwards, but its with a toy - he needs to do without a toy
walk up and down stairs without assistance - he can walk up and down with assistance. - this we are starting to do everyday from now on.

will be looking into getting a small trampoline
Goal is for him to be able to go out on the playground next year for preschool and be safe. P.T. will re evaluate him next Spring.

First day of school
Jonathon had a great first day of school today. He remembered his teachers and did very well with them. And in return they seemed to be pleased where he is at.
Speech teacher seemed pleased with his progress. We didn't get very much time with her because she had the schedule wrong. So we kinda missed our time with her.
The teacher said he is doing great. He played by himself for about 20 minutes while we discussed some things before going onto another toy. She said this is what they do in preschool - switch stations every 20 minutes - so that was good. Jonathon talked to the teacher and actually did not want to leave.
Found out that my original p.t. from Capac - Miss Jen - is at Memphis this year. I am so happy. And sad. I love her - but Jonathon is being evaluated on Thursday with o.t. and p.t. to see if he needs to continue services or is finished with their services. O.T. I agree, he is probably finished - he is doing awesome!!!! P.T. - he is doing fine, but I just don't know if I want to cancel services. I want to make sure he is getting the best therapy and I am good, but I am not them. They are trained to do this. So we will see.
Totally forgot to take 1st day pictures. Don't know what I was thinking. Guess I will get pictures on THursday instead. Very happy with today. We are off to a good start.
Teacher also gave me a heads up that sometime this year depending on how Jonathon is doing she wants him to spend some time in her actual preschool class to help prepare for next year. Sure no problem. Excited about that. But wow! Preschool. Doesn't seem real.

Random Thoughts
I received a phone message from Jonathon's teacher Friday evening. First day of school is September 22nd. Time is 11:15a.m. til 12:15p.m. 1/2 hour with teacher and 1/2 hour with speech teacher(same as last year).
Teacher also explained in my phone message that he will have school on Thursday September 24th with his O.T. Amanda and P.T. Annette. Time will be 10:30a.m. til 11:30a.m. Now on his first day back with O.T. and P.T. they will be doing an assessment and deciding if Jonathon will continue with them this school year or they will be releasing him and I can keep in contact with them both and go back to them if needed. O.K. I have mixed feelings on this. Yes, Hooray!!!! My goal all along has been for Jonathon to be able to mainstream in public school. Goal....not even comprehending that it could be preschool when he actually starts mainstream. I believe this is every mothers dream. I am also nervous......should I allow them to stop their services with Jonathon?
I spoke my concerns with my original P.T. Jen over the summer. (Jonathon was able to work with her for 3 weeks, once per week) Which Jen says Jonathon is doing wonderful and I should be proud....which I am. (very proud). She also told me to just make sure I state it correctly that I want to be able to contact them anytime for them to see Jonathon again if I feel it's needed.
Do I think he needs O.T. services anymore? If I compare Jonathon to my older boys(yes I am comparing) no, I do not think he needs O.T. He is doing everything and more of the same as them at this age.
Do I think he needs P.T. services anymore? This one I am not so sure on. Yes he is walking. Walking great. Not running yet. He can climb stairs up and down with my help. Not on his own yet. We are working on jumping. He is very strong and is able to stand up in the middle of the room without using his arms,hands for support anymore. When we go shopping I still usually carry him into the store, he gets distracted very easily and it's just time consuming to let him walk sometimes. Plus its weird, because Andrew and Kenny were able to go up and down the stairs on their butts at this age, but being that Jonathon has down syndrome he isn't allowed. He is supposed to do it the big boy(adult way). Sometimes I feel that they push our children with special needs way too far too fast and don't let them just be "kids" "toddlers".
So I am a little nervous about next week. I also know deep down that when the time comes I will know what to do and how to handle it. I just hate waiting and thinking........ I think I will make sure my social worker is there that day with me.

School Today
went well for Jonathon. He showed O.T.(Amanda) how he can put all his shapes in his shape sorter bucket and then he stacked all his cups together, which ends up being taller than him almost.(used to be, but Jonathon has grown). Then they worked on a puzzle together~this one had little pegs~he needs to use his pincher finger to get the piece out. We have these puzzles at home, so we will start working on these now.
Amanda gave me a great idea to do with bubbles. Blow the bubbles and have Jonathon use his pointer finger to "pop" the bubbles. Never thought of that~so when we go outside later we will get our bubbles out and try popping them.
On to P.T.(Annette) Got some good news from her today. We will be having summer services(school)once per week. She is going to start the summer off and then Miss Jen(my previous P.T. from last year)will end the summer. Miss Jen is having her second baby anyday now(this I did not know, so will be sending her a gift). I am very excited that we will be able to continue on with school through out the summer just like last year. And it is centrally located this year at Woodlands~this is 20 minutes from my house.
We will also be doing summer activities again this summer with all the children located in St.Clair County. I had alot of fun last summer and Andrew and Kenny enjoyed the time also with Jonathon.
Bad news about summer activities is that we might not be able to swim like last year. The swim teacher has retired and they are not sure what will take place. I really hope something opens up b/c that was one of Jonathon's favorite activities. He so enjoys the water.
I really need to look into us getting into the YMCA. My social worker was trying to get a scholarship for us, but said they were put on hold because of the economy. I think I will just pop in there and see what it is all about.
Amanda gave me a great idea to do with bubbles. Blow the bubbles and have Jonathon use his pointer finger to "pop" the bubbles. Never thought of that~so when we go outside later we will get our bubbles out and try popping them.
On to P.T.(Annette) Got some good news from her today. We will be having summer services(school)once per week. She is going to start the summer off and then Miss Jen(my previous P.T. from last year)will end the summer. Miss Jen is having her second baby anyday now(this I did not know, so will be sending her a gift). New Classroom
This is our classroom on Thursdays(used to be)As you can see there is not much room for walking where Jonathon is with p.t. and that is o.t. on the other side of him working with a little boy. So how would you expect someone to learn to walk when you cannot go off of the puzzle mat.
On Tuesdays we spend our time in an actual classroom. On Thursdays for p.t. and o.t. we are actually in a small conference room. Not anymore. Today was our first day having p.t. in the Tuesday classroom. It went much better, Jonathon was able to walk for a few with the hula hoop and then he got to have a turn pushing the shopping cart around the classroom and then had time to practice transitioning from one table to another.(he can take 3 steps in between 2 tables)with the help of p.t. I am happy with our new arrangement. O.T. was on vacation today, so we will see what she has planned next Thursday.

I have to laugh
Well 10 years went by before I was blessed with another son and some things I have to laugh about that I had forgotten about: You must pick up the cat food dishes, especially the water!(LOL) I must have mopped up and changed Jonathon 3x Tuesday morning before it finally clicked, ummm might want to pick that up mommy! I couldn't even scold him because it was my fault. Today we are doing better so far at remembering.
School went great yesterday for once,(I really do not like Tuesday school) I think it's a waste of our time most times. I am still trying to figure out what speech and teacher are trying to accomplish.(UGH) But Jonathon spent first half hour in high chair playing little games, til it was block stacking time- now this is a losing battle-he knows how to stack blocks, he just doesn't want too and he likes to throw them-why! I have no clue. So after about 4 blocks sailing thru the air, I finally said"Come on Jonathon, just stack them nice please" AND he did!!!!!!!! That's my boy. Then with speech we pushed the little shopping cart around and loaded and unloaded grocercies. She was able to see that he is doing better at trying to walk. Then they read some books together. All in all decent day.
Now on to this morning. It is snowing again and we have an appointment this morning. I do not like driving in the snow at all. And I really do not like driving in the snow if it's not somewhere I travel all the time and today is not somewhere I travel all the time. I am hoping the roads are not too bad. I guess we will leave early!

Well we survived our outing! On the way to our appointment I was cussing myself out asking WHY are we out in this mess. I attempted to get off expressway, but totally missed my exit, so continued on my way and when I finally made it to our exit, I stopped and took a picture and Thanked the Lord for getting us there safely! Of course Jonathon didn't care as he was napping the whole time! But we are glad to be back home in our safe warm home to continue our day on!
