Movie Day

We had a movie store open back up in our neighboring town about 1 month ago.  It is called Family Video.  For the first month you recieve 1/2 off of everything so we have been visiting once per week. We are able to rent 5 movies for about 3.50.  Pretty cool if you ask me.

This has become a weekly ritual for Jonathon and I.  Sometimes we take the big brothers along, but mostly its just us.  This has been a good time for some practice.  Jonathon has been practicing listening to mom and walking up and down the aisles with mom.  He has been learning not to touch all the movies and take them off of the shelf.  He has been learning that he may take a movie if he wants to rent it.

This video store has alot of older kid movies that you are able to rent for free.  It is so overwhelming to see so many movies.  But every week he is doing better and better.

When we first started there was a lot of yelling(on Jonathon's part) and tugging(holding hands) and running(Jonathon running away from me).  I stuck it out though even when we made a few scenes.  And it was well worth it because today we went after school and we had a very nice time looking at all the movies and deciding which ones to rent.

We rented Berenstein Bears, Franklin goes to school and Dumbo.  And Lynx.  not sure what that is, but it looks like it might be interesting.  Mommy got some movies for the big kids too.

Jonathon tried to escape one time, but I just explained that we would leave the store with nothing and he came back to me.  And then when we were leaving he told the lady good bye and thank you!  I am soo sooo proud of him.  And I made sure I told him just how proud I was and how polite that was to say Thank you and good bye.

I can honestly say that I have not touched the stroller since........ummm......since.....August.  Wow .....since August?  That's wonderful!

So we already watched Dumbo, which Jonathon really liked and now we are watching the Berenstein Bears.  He seems to like this movie too.

Detroit Zoo Cancelled.....

Our day started out with a temp of 47 and rain.  I decided it was not a good idea to head off to the zoo with the class.

Instead we went to the movies.  This was Jonathon's first time ever in a movie theater.  He did great.  I am glad that I took his headphones along.  He used them in the beginning of the movie because it was loud and I think it scared him a little.  Then he took them off and did not use them until the very end when the music got loud again.

He got sucked right up into the chair like a pretzel.  I had to keep my leg on it.  He did sit on my lap through most of the movie.

Afterwards we went to eat lunch and then rode the horse carousel at the mall.  Then we went off to Target quickly to get daddy some new socks and then hurried home to pick Andrew up from school.

It rained the entire day....like a drizzle, but cold, damp, and just YUCK.  I am very glad I did not go to the zoo.

We had a great day!

Three Year Check up

Some may think that a 3 yr. check up is a piece of cake ~ go to the pediatrician ~ get weighed ~ get measured ~ take temperature ~ discuss with Dr. Pediatrician if your child is doing what a typical child should be doing........... and get your updated shots!

Well it is/was not a piece of cake for us........

Jonathon had a 3:15p.m. appointment with Dr. Pediatrician.  He got weighed (26.6lbs)  He has finally gained weight.  He was stuck at 25lbs for the LONGEST time. Happy about that.  Then he got measured ~ he refused to stand up next to the wall so he had to lay down like a baby and get measured. 35"  Happy, he is continuing to grow!

Then it was time for a shot ~ he kept telling me "NO"!!  He was not happy.  I played his toy radio/Ipod and he cried for a few seconds and we were done!  Good job.  Talked with Dr. Pediatrician about what Jonathon has been up too and he was pleased.  Then we got our scripts to go to the hospital and get blood work done for Thyroid and Jonathon had to get an xray of his cervical spine(Atlantoaxial Instability)

Let's just say that it was not a good trip!  Jonathon screamed his head off and cried and cried while getting blood taken.  It was over very quick, but he was sooooo upset that they couldn't get him to stop bleeding.  Finally I asked if he could get out of the chair and see my cell phone (I have apps that he likes to play).  They said yes and he calmed down enough to stop bleeding and get his bandaid.  While blood was being taken he was soooo upset that he had a small accident so we had to find a restroom to clean up.  Then it was off to xrays.  Which I "THOUGHT" was going to be quick and fast...........ummm not even close.......

As soon as we walked into the x-ray room Jonathon was upset ~ I told him he was going to get his picture taken and say cheese ~ he wasn't having any part of that ~ we tried everything to settle him down ~ he just cried, yelled and squirmed off of the table ~ I really think he remembers x-rays from when he was 5 months old and they strapped him in a machine ~ as my heart was breaking I had to get him to hold still to get the x-ray done ~ we ended up having Andrew help out ~ I had to hold Jonathon's arms and Andrew had to hold his head still and we both had to listen to him scream and yell and cry like we were killing him ~ we eventually got 6 x-rays taken and got the heck out of there.

I hugged and hugged Jonathon and told him what a good big boy he was!  After lots of kisses we walked hand in hand back to the van and then went to dinner at Big Boys.  Jonathon was feeling much better after dinner and then we took him to Toys R Us to pick out a new toy ~ he picked Lightning McQueen Shake and Go car ~ and then we took my exhausted baby home.

He slept well and is doing much better today ~ he still looks a little tired from his traumatizing day yesterday but is back to his old self today!

I am not looking forward to our Detroit trip next week when we go see the cardiologist.  I hope he doesn't freak out when we do the echo cardiogram.....

Results from yesterday will be in early next week!

Fun in the Sun

This morning we decided to pack a lunch ~ grab our swimsuits ~ call our friends ~ and head out to the local Splash Pad/Park.

It was a perfect day to go because the kids were ready to get wet at 10a.m. and it was warm enough to do just that.

We spent some time running around in the splash park ~ Jonathon is getting much better at walking instead of running and keeping his head up to see where he is going.  Then we found some shade to have lunch.  After that we played on the swings, slides and bounce animals.

Great day out with our closest friends.

                                           Splash pad with Kenny

Jonathon was able to climb very high with the help
                                                   of Nik and Andrew
                                                      Very Happy Boy

We really had a great day and I cannot believe how much Jonathon is becoming a big boy lately!  He climbed really high and it took lots of muscles to do it to just be able to fly down this slide.

We had an awesome day!

My baby is growing up....

At Christmas time I started putting Jonathon in bed instead of rocking him......
I still rocked him for naps though..........until recently

On Friday we went out for a few hours and got home after nap time so I just put him to bed and he went to sleep pretty fast and took a really good nap..........

On Saturday we had swimming at the Y and then I had to run a few errands so we got home late for lunch and it was already past nap time, so we had lunch and then I just put him to bed and again he went to sleep pretty fast and slept for over 2 hours........

Today we went to church in the morning and then came home and played......we had lunch on time and then when it was nap time I just put him to bed...... within 19 minutes he was fast asleep......

I am very proud of Jonathon that he stayed in his bed and didn't give me a problem.....on the other hand I am kinda sad....he doesn't need mommy to rock him anymore.....

I guess he is growing up......

Potty Training is Complete

                                                      Step 1

                                                      Step 2
I AM A BIG BOY NOW!!!!

This will be my very last post on Potty Training ~ Potty Training has been completed ~ June 18th I let Jonathon wear his underwear to bed ~ Jonathon has been wearing underwear full time ever since ~ I am proud to say ~ NO ACCIDENTS

Jonathon is starting to let me know when he has to go potty ~ he holdS his tummy and yells at me ~ if I am not in the room he comes and finds me ~ holding his tummy ~ if I ask Jonathon if he has to go potty ~ he will answer me yes or no ~ and I believe his answer now ~ I ask him if he needs to pee or poop ~ he answers and answers truthfully/correctly

Our goal is to get rid of his urinal this summer and use a step stool to stand on to pee ~ so he will be comfortable when he goes back to school in Sept ~ another goal is to get rid of his potty seat and get him to always sit on the big toilet without one ~ so again he is comfortable and ready to go back to school ~ and most of all work on him telling other people besides mommy that he needs to go.

So there could be an update on those things in the future ~ but I am PROUD and HAPPY to say :HOORAY JONATHON!!!!!  I LOVE YOU SO VERY MUCH AND AM SO VERY PROUD OF YOU FOR BEING FINISHED WITH POTTY TRAINING!  YOU ARE AMAZING AND MY MIRACLE!

Busy Busy Busy

Happy St. Patricks Day!  I grew up thinking that I was Irish only to find out a few years ago that we are not Irish.......  We lived in a town full of Irish patrons so my mom and dad decided to say "We are Irish"  Silly parents I have!  But we still celebrate like we are!

Jonathon has had a very busy week so far.  Monday evening we went out to our St. Clair County Down Syndrome Support Group Meeting.  A Few families showed up.  We ate pizza, fruit, and cookies along with pop and got to sit down and visit with some other families while some of the children went outside to play.  Jonathon spent his time keeping daddy busy running back and forth through out the house we were in.  He did pretty well over all.  Hopefully next month will be warmer so he can also go out and play.

Tuesday evening Kenny had a meeting at school about the Honor Society Trip coming up in May.  Needless to say Jonathon spent the whole 30 minutes talking non stop kinda loud "out loud"  At least the other parents thought he was cute.

He has been getting to bed close to 9p.m. when he use to go to bed at 7:30p.m.  At least he is not grumpy during the day.  Hopefully we can get a handle on this time change soon.

School is going very well for Jonathon.  Teacher says that he is still trying to shove food in his mouth and needs to be reminded to eat just one bite at a time.  I need to figure out how to get a handle on this.  This is a big problem at home too.

Circle Time :  He helped count the number of objects(green trains, boats, and buses) in their counting box.  He was encouraged to put one in at a time while the teacher counted and with minimal prompts he did a great job!

He has to be reminded to stay seated during circle time, but continues to improve each week.

Jonathon had a good day.  The other students look out for him.  They interact more with him than he does with them.  He will look at them and then go back to what he is doing/playing.

Good report from teacher!

Fun in the Snow

Well the snow finally stopped.  The rain finally stopped. The wind finally calmed down.
Sooooo we bundled up and ventured outside yesterday morning.  Let me just say Jonathon loves it very much and was not too happy when he had to come back in.

Our snow is a very wet snow ~ I thought the big brothers would build him a snowman ~ no they didn't ~ maybe next time.

Sitting in the snow

And lying in the snow

And down again!

We had a great time playing outside and I am glad Jonathon also loves the snow!

On our way

So last summer I received some pec cards from summer school.  I have some medium size ones and some little ones.  I have a majority of different pictures.  Last summer Jonathon really did not seem interested so I put them away.

I have been cleaning and organizing lately and I came across the pec cards again.  I decided to bring them out to see what Jonathon would do with them.  Now the little cards have velcro on the back of them and they stick to a schedule sheet that sticks to the fridge.  He rips them off daily and sticks them back on.  Some pictures he is beginning to learn.

But what I am really proud of is the medium size cards.  We only have a few this size and I have been trying to decide to get some more made or purchase some other sort of flash card.

These are the words that Jonathon knows very well and you can really understand exactly what he is saying!  I am once again so so proud of my little boy and I cannot wait for him to learn even more.

W.I.C.

Jonathon had his appointment this morning.  We had to go back to the old yucky place in Port Huron.  We were going to Capac (much better, cleaner, nicer, newer facility), but they shut down.

We got right in though - that was nice.  I hate sitting around waiting at these things.  Jonathon of course wanted to play and make friends, but I just couldn't let him.  With the H1N1 crap going around I really try to avoid ALL germs.  I know that is impossible and trust me Jonathon is not in a bubble.

Jonathon weighs 24lbs 12 oz - he has lost weight.  He used to weigh 25lbs.  We will be going back for a weight check in 3 months.
The dietician told me to try Carnation Instant Breakfast in his milk.  And everything else was pretty much keep doing what we have been doing.  I am just hoping his weight loss is because he just had surgery and nothing else is going on.  So now it's time to work on fattening him up!

Jonathon's height is 2ft. 9 inches.  Pretty good there.  I knew he was getting taller.  He is outgrowing everything.  I cannot believe some of his clothes are 3T now because of his height. (of course then they fall off because of his weight).

And Jonathon had his iron checked.  He is at 13.3(Excellent)

We left W.I.C. and stopped off at Sams Club on the way home. Picked up some Carnation Instant Breakfast mix, Fruit Snacks, Gatorade(for big brothers) and Hershey Kisses(for everyone). Oh and Jonathon picked out a huge book of stickers(Disney Cars of course)  He is really into stickers lately and he is always rewarded with a trip to the toy store after being poked for blood.

Got home and tried right away to give him some milk.   Ummmm he is not too sure about this.  He drank a little with his lunch and we will try more at dinner.  Hopefully he will learn to like it.  When I go back out I will get him some different flavors.

All in all a good day.

Potty Training Update

I believe we have finally advanced to the next level of potty training.

Monday afternoon Jonathon had his first underwear accident.  I explained to him how he must tell mommy that he needs to go the bathroom "before" he actually goes.  There was sadness in his eyes and a few tears ~ We put a fresh pair of undies on and continued on with our day.

Thursday evening after dinner Jonathon was playing in the living room while I was cleaning up the kitchen when Gilbert said "Hey why does he do that"?  I look over to see Jonathon pulling down his pants ~ I quickly went over to him and said "oh lets go potty" ~ And he went

Just a few minutes ago Jonathon was sitting in the hallway looking at his Disney book and trying to take stickers out of the back when I heard "Mama"  "MAMA"  His tone changed quickly so I hurried over to him to him walking toward me with pants "soaked" ~ this time I did not have a tone like on Monday because he really did try ~ he called me ~ I just didn't get to him fast enough.  Which makes me sad, but it's a step I know we have to go through!

Makes me very very proud that he is finally getting it on his own to at least try to tell me!  I know one day Jonathon will be totally potty trained, but for now i will continue to be patient with him.

There are many days since last February when I started this whole potty training thing that I have wanted to take a BREAK!!!  But I have never done that ~ through my migraines, my tiredness, Jonathon being sick, my trips out of the house to wherever, not being able to sleep in EVER, and Jonathon having surgery we have never taken a BREAK!!  It's a long long road to success, but when you get this close there are no words of how a mother feels!!!!

Keep up the good work Jonathon we are almost there!  Mommy loves you very very much and is very very proud of you!

Surgery is Over!

What a long and exhausting day this has been!  We were up at 4a.m. to leave at 5a.m. to be at hospital at 6:30a.m.

We got lost ~ we (hubby and I) got into huge arguement over me not getting correct directions! I did, they were just confusing. ~ by the time we turned around ~ we missed our exit AGAIN! ~ Again I got yelled at! (as our 14yr. old is sitting in back with Jonathon) poor Andrew and Jonathon. ~ I am so over getting yelled at! ~ so I called hospital to let them know what was going on. ~ they were fine and said to take our time ~ we woke to a snowstorm ~ roads were horrendous! ~ we were only 10 minutes late. ~ and by now I was a little ticked off!

We stayed with Jonathon til 7:35a.m. and then they took him back.  Even though this was a much simpler surgery than OHS, it still crushed me to watch my baby get wheeled away. ~ We went to the next waiting area and then Andrew and I hurried to go get a drink ~ I forgot my Gatorade at home. ~ and most everyone knows I "NEED" that! ~while we were gone (2 minutes) someone had come out and let my husband know that yes they would be taking the adnoids out too. ~ so we waited. ~ not very long and they came to get us to go to another room to wait for the Dr. ~ as we are sitting and waiting Gilbert and I hear a scream ~ "Is that Jonathon?"  First time we weren't sure. ~ but when that door opened again and I heard it again ~ a mother just knows ~ "IT WAS MY BABY!"

Trying to hold composure til Dr. came in.  He talked with us really quick and then someone would be out to get us in about 20 - 30 minutes he said. As he was leaving the room a nurse was walking in to get us. ~ Thank God! ~ Dr. was surprised. ~ i didn't care ~ just get me to my baby. ~ I walked into recovery ~ to Jonathon screaming and thrashing all about ~ trying to come out of the anesthesia ~ They gave him to me and I just "hugged   him sooooo tight and talked to him"  ~ And yes lots of tears from mommy too ~ After a few minutes we both settled down. ~ he drifted in and out of sleep ~ took maybe 30 to 45 minutes to get him to drink ~ then he felt better. ~ we were dressed and on the road by 9:30a.m. "HOORAY!"

We were half way home when Jonathon vomitted all over! ~ Luckily we were able to pullover and luckily I always pack way too much stuff!  I was able to clean him up and carseat and change his clothes and we were off again.

got home around 10:30a.m. ~ He has had a little bit of water and just a few bites of jello.  I know he is hungry ~ but his throat is bothering him ~ rocked him to sleep and I think I will give him Tylenol later so then maybe he will be able to tolerated the jello.

I have to put drops in his ears ~ 3 drops 3x per day for 3 days and then we go for a recheck in 3 weeks. ~ It will be really weird tonight when I don't have to do the Little Noses.

Happy to be home ~ Happy Jonathon is resting ~ Happy surgery was a success!

Update about School

Jonathon finally made it to a Tuesday "day" at school.  It's been forever!  School on Tuesday are spent with speech for 30 minutes and then the teacher for 30 minutes.

We will be having a meeting next Thursday with P.T., O.T., Speech, Teacher, and  Social Worker.  After Christmas Vacation things are changing.

Jonathon has graduated out of P.T. and also O.T.  He is doing so well that there is talk about him going into the actual preschool room starting in January.  You can start preschool as young as 2 1/2 yrs. old and Jonathon will be just that.

There is 2 different preschool programs at Memphis Community Schools.  The program that the typical children attend and then the special needs program.  With the special needs program there is 1 teacher and 1 teachers aide to 4 or 5 children.  Jonathon will not be left out.  He will get what he needs while he attends this program.
Will update more when I find out more.

Our Holloween

I understand that I am late posting about Holloween, but I have been extremely busy chasing a little boy around to put his glasses back on.  My new language consist of "NO"  "Put these back on"

Jonathon did not go out, it was just too cold and he just got over being sick.  So we let him run around with his costume on inside for a few minutes.  He was very cute!

Glasses are here

Jonathon and I went out yesterday and picked up his glasses again.  You see the first pair were made wrong;the lense had a flaw in it;he was supposed to wear them for our "Buddy Walk", but we couldn't.  We have been keeping this secret from most of our friends and family.  Not that it's a big deal;we just wanted Jonathon to have time to adjust before they all started coming out of the woodwork to see him(voice their opinion). Okay, maybe mommy needed time to adjust too, before I put up with everyone else and their comments.

Yesterday was rough.  Jonathon was very sad ~ He didn't want to wear the glasses.  He would stick out his bottom lip and it crushed my heart.  I didn't stop though.  I kept putting them back on.  Let's just say by dinnertime I was extremely frustrated AND very glad that it was almost bedtime.  EXHAUSTION is an understatement.

And lets remember if you missed the previous post:  Jonathon is wearing glasses for farsightedness and lazy eye.  Same symptoms his father has.  His father has worn glasses since he was 3.  Jonathon could out grow this one day~ not a promise and not going to worry about that.  Not making excuses ~ this could be the result of his extra chromosome, but it also could just be plain ole HEREDITARY!

Yesterday before glasses

Don't like these mommy!

Getting used to glasses

There's my happy boy!

Today has been a better day!  We have had a few moments, but I have to say overall he is doing pretty good keeping the glasses on.  I think they are a little crooked now;I tried to fix them at lunchtime but not sure if I did.  I will let the expert(daddy) take a look when he gets home later.  I decided yesterday before the big brothers got home that the best way to go about Jonathon wearing glasses was to ignore the fact that Jonathon is wearing glasses.  I even text Andrew to let him know this and to tell Kenny before they came in.  I know all they wanted to say was "oh your sooo cute"  "I like your glasses"  but they didn't.  They did just what I had asked of them and for that they are 2 great big brothers.  And my theory is working.  As long as we don't make a big deal about it he seems to be ok overall.  AND I have been wearing my glasses more to show him that we need to wear our glasses.  (mine are just for when I am on the computer or reading).

Jonathon is napping now and resting his little eyes.  Then we will continue our day;learning to like our new glasses!

This ""IS" my Jonathon!

Random Thoughts

Jonathon and I have had a pretty quiet week this week.

1. Monday ~ We did absolutely nothing ~ But hang out
2. Tuesday~ School cancelled ~ both teachers sick
3. Tuesday afternoon ~ went to Dr. Braces and picked up old braces ~ new velcro put on
4. Wednesday - woke up to no power ~ packed up and went to Rylee's house for breakfast. ~ then we came home and got dressed and went shopping
5. Thursday ~ School cancelled O.T. teacher sick ~ stayed home
6. Friday ~ Playdate with Rylee cancelled ~ stayed home ~ Jonathon coming down with a cold

During all this past week I waited for a phone call from the Optician.  They are remaking Jonathon's glasses because I found a wave in the lense.  They were supposed to be rushed, but I am not sure what kind of rush.  The whole week went by and NOTHING.  Will be calling on Monday.

Jonathon spent alot of time drawing on his easel with the marker side.  He is now doing really well.  When we first tried in July he kept holding the marker upside down and coloring his hands.  So I just let him do the chalk side.  Well now he is able to do the marker side.  I am very proud of him because he is trying really hard to do circles. They are not exactly correct circles, but you can tell its not just a line any longer.  Great job son!!!!

Friday night was rough on Jonathon, he was having a hard time breathing; I am thinking this is the start of a sinus infection.  He has been doing awesome.  We made it through the whole summer with nothing.  Last year his first sinus infection was in September so this is good, it's almost November.  I had Andrew get a ride uptown this morning to buy Jonathon some Benedryl.  Gave him that and Tylenol(slight fever) and he is breathing much better now.  Hopefully we can nip this in the butt and it not turn into a sinus infection.

Looks like no school for Jonathon this week.

Called Dr. Pediatrician to schedule flu shot ~ they are all gone.  Jonathon has been added to the list and they will get back with us.  BUMMER

Jonathon is doing great eating finger foods.  He really enjoys being a big boy while eating cheez pons and goldfish crackers and graham crackers.  I just sit and watch in total amazement, it's been a long time coming and I am sooo happy for him.  He really concentrates too, it's precious and brings tears to my eyes.

We are still practicing on spoon and fork alone.  He is doing good for a start with the spoon feeding.  We try on yogurt and pudding.  Sometimes mommy gets so busy at dinner time that I just forget and just do it.  I watched Supernanny last night and had a good reality check when the father was feeding his 3yr. old.  Ummmm I need to just take the time to let Jonathon try and not be so rushed.  It makes me mad that hubby doesn't help out more at dinnertime.  But somehow someway Jonathon and I will figure out how to get it done.  We always do!!!!

I have changed feeding schedule too.
7a.m. breakfast
9a.m. snack
11a.m. snack
12p.m. lunch
3p.m. snack
5-5:30p.m. dinner
7-7:30p.m. dessert
8p.m. bedtime
I added a snack in there and letting him stay up a little longer.  I am working on getting him to just go to bed.(I still rock him).  I love rocking Jonathon, but he needs to learn to just go in and go to sleep.  I am hoping by Christmas time we will have this accomplished.
Thinking about switching bedrooms back so our room(Jonathon)is in back of house for my quiet.  Right now we are in bigger room but its right off of the living room and kitchen and it gets loud at nighttime.  He moves around alot and I think it's the lights and noise.  We will see.  Will let ya know what I decide.

Oh and our new words are "MINE"  "Kenny"(really clear now). trying really hard to say "please"
